Avocados and blueberries added to Consumer Price Index for first time in 2026

Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) has added avocados and blueberries to the Consumer Price Index shopping basket for the first time in 2026, reflecting the changing tastes of the nation’s consumers.
Once considered niche or exotic, both products have gone from being occasional treats to becoming part of the daily diet of millions of households. Boosted by the health “real food” trends, they will now be monitored monthly to measure price changes.
Every five years, the INE reviews the structure of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to ensure it accurately reflects reality. However, despite the new additions, food has seen its relative influence on the overall index slightly reduced compared to other services like transportation and eating outside the home.
