Citrinos do Algarve PGI aims to reach new international consumers with major new marketing campaign

AlgarOrange, the Association of Algarve Citrus Fruit Operators behind the Citrinos do Algarve (Citrus from Algarve) PGI, has launched a far-reaching international marketing campaign to target new consumers.

The campaign will feature a series of actions in four key markets – Spain, France, Germany and Canada – and run until December 2026. According to AlgarOrange, these countries were chosen not only for their strong growth potential, but also because they host some of the industry’s biggest international fairs, bringing together thousands of potential customers from all over the world. In total, five international activities are planned in these countries, along with three in the Algarve, aimed at promoting Citrinos do Algarve PGI to tourists and foreign visitors.

“Through this initiative, we aim to increase awareness and international visibility of Citrinos do Algarve and enhance international consumers’ perception of their quality, differentiation and added value,” the association said.

Under the slogan ‘Get the taste. Feel the sun’, the new campaign invites consumers to taste oranges, tangerines, clementines and lemons produced in the Algarve – Portugal’s main citrus producing region – where the soil and year-round sunshine are ideal for the cultivation of citrus. According to AlgarOrange, this gives the fruit just the right balance of sweetness and acidity, with a thin, shiny peel and a high juice content. The campaign kicks off at this month’s Fruit Attraction.

“The aim of this message is to transmit the sensory experience of tasting Citrinos do Algarve PGI and linking their consumption to a positive feeling, to the joy and well-being that the sun provides,” said José Oliveira, chairman of AlgarOrange. “We are opening up in strategic markets and strengthening the competitiveness of the region’s companies.”

The Citrinos do Algarve PGI covers citrus produced in the municipalities of Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, S. Brás de Alportel, Silves, Vila Real de Santo António, Loulé (except the civil parish of Ameixial) and Tavira (except the civil parish of Cachopo). In the 2023/24 season, production exceeded 64,000 tonnes, the highest in the last eight years. There is a total of 15 operators in the region currently producing citrus fruits with PGI certification.
