Reybanpac, Ecuador’s largest producer and second-largest exporter of premium bananas, has published its biennial sustainability report for 2024 and 2025, prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. The new report details the company’s environmental and social best practices within its banana division, in line with its purpose of nurturing people and cultivating well-being.

General manager José Antonio Vargas said despite the challenges it faced, Reybanpac had reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable and resilient management through three key pillars: nurturing people, cultivating responsibly and growing stronger communities.

“We have optimised water use in our operations; implemented irrigation water disinfection systems as a preventive biosafety measure; and strengthened our precision agriculture practices to conserve soil and optimise the use of agricultural inputs,” he said.

According to Reybanpac, one of the pillars of sustainable management is the well-being of its people: by the end of 2025, the company had created nearly 6,000 jobs, making it one of Ecuador’s largest employers. “For all of them, we provide a work environment that promotes holistic well-being and satisfaction through safe working conditions, training and professional development programmes, and a culture of respect and equity,” the company said.

Among the environmental milestones highlighted in the report is the elimination of nematicide use through the application of microorganisms to 100 per cent of Reybanpac’s crops, which span 7,000ha.

Likewise, Reybanpac has installed 32 UV-based systems to disinfect surface water used for irrigation, thereby strengthening its ability to prevent and manage plant health issues in its operations in the face of threats such as moko and Fusarium Wilt TR4.

Furthermore, currently, 98.14 per cent of Reybanpac’s plantations use subfolic irrigation, which optimises water consumption per cycle and per hectare, resulting in savings of 59,276m³ per irrigation cycle.

Regarding its commitment to the communities in which it operates, the company continued to undertake initiatives focused on five areas: rural education, community development, local leadership, women’s empowerment, and strengthening young people’s productive skills.

In this last area, the Agrofuturo programme, developed in partnership with the Wong Foundation, graduated 170 students as Banana Technical Assistants in 2025. This initiative aims to develop productive skills among young people in the provinces of Los Ríos and Santo Domingo to facilitate their entry into the workforce or the creation of businesses that will enable them to secure their livelihoods.
