Company recognised for developing the first specific methodology for measuring the ecological footprint of vegetable varieties
Semillas Fitó has won the Retina ECO 2025 Award in the Sustainable Ecosystem category for its pioneering project to measure the environmental impact of vegetable varieties. The award was presented by Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain during a gala held at the Real Teatro de Retiro in Madrid.
Collecting the award, Elisabet Fitó, corporate director of Semillas Fitó, said: “With this project, our goal is to reliably measure the sustainability efforts made throughout the agri-food chain through seeds”.
The project, entitled Plant Varieties to Reduce the Ecological Footprint of Agriculture, was recognised for its innovative nature, scientific rigor, and potential application across the entire agri-food sector. The company, together with the Institut Cerdà, developed a specific methodology adapted to the horticultural sector to calculate environmental impact at the varietal level, following the principles of the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).
