Spain’s January fresh fruit and vegetable exports have recorded a steady reduction in volume while increasing in value over the last five years.

According to new analysis by Fepex, January 2026 saw exports reach 1.14mn tonnes, 8.5 per cent less than in the same month of 2025, while value stood at €1.95bn, up 0.6 per cent year-on-year.

Analysis of data for January 2022-2026 shows that export volume has decreased from 1.31mn tonnes to 1.14mn tonnes, with ”year-on-year declines and slight fluctuations”.

By contrast, value has followed an upward trend, rising from €1.61bn to €1.95bn during the five years in question according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, processed by Fepex.

The EU remains the main destination market for Spanish exports.

For January 2026, shipments to the EU reached 936,644 tonnes, representing 82 per cent of the total volume, a 9 per cent decrease compared to January 2025.

In value, EU exports amounted to €1.581bn, 81 per cent of the total, with a year-on-year increase of 0.8 per cent.

The main export markets within the EU are Germany, with 324,405 tonnes (down 10 per cent on January 2025) and €581mn in value, and France, with 186,084 tonnes (down 11 per cent) at €309mn.

Meanwhile, exports to third countries totalled 203,101 tonnes, 18 per cent of the total and a 4.7 per cent decrease compared to the previous year.

The value of exports to these destinations reached €371mn.

The main third-country destination for Spanish fruits and vegetables is the UK, with 137,669 tonnes, down 4 per cent year-on-year, with a value of €257mn (up 1 per cent).

“For Fepex, this trend demonstrates the sector’s ability to maintain export value despite lower volumes,” the association said.

”However, it is crucial to preserve the competitiveness of Spanish produce by ensuring a balanced regulatory framework and advancing under conditions of fair competition among all operators in the European market.”
