Mangoes are gaining ground in Spanish households. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Household Food Consumption Panel shows that domestic consumption reached 49,857 tonnes in 2025, 33.4 per cent up on the 37,366 tonnes consumed in the previous year.

This figure encompasses all mangoes purchased by Spanish households, regardless of origin.

The new Spanish season is currently underway. It begins in late summer, with peak volumes concentrated in September and October, and can extend for several more weeks depending on variety and production area.

According to Intertropic, the Spanish Interprofessional Organisation for Avocados and Mangoes, proximity to major European markets allows Spanishmangoes to be harvested at the optimal stage of physiological ripeness and significantly reduces the time between harvest and the point of sale, helping to preserve the fruit’s organoleptic qualities.

“Mangoes are already a staple in many Spanish households, and the next step is for consumers to be able to make choices based on origin,” said Intertropic’s general manager Antonio Carpintero. “European mangoes have their own season and offer a very simple advantage: proximity allows them to be harvested at the right stage of physiological maturity, drastically reducing the distance and time it takes for them to reach the consumer. That can make a significant difference to the eating experience.”

Spain is Europe’s leading mango producer, with around 6,150ha of production. Cultivation is concentrated primarily in the Axarquía region of Málaga and the Costa Tropical of Granada.

The season begins with early varieties such as Irwin and, to a lesser extent, Tommy Atkins, before giving way to Osteen, the leading European mango variety grown in Spain. The campaign then moves on to Kent and Keitt (a later-ripening variety and the second most produced).

Intertropic is currently promoting a campaign to raise awareness of European-grown tropical fruit. Co-financed by the European Union, the €9mn ‘Avocado and Mango from Europe: Fruits with Heart’ campaign is structured around two programmes running in Spain, France, Italy, and the UK until 2028.

Its goal is to increase awareness and consumption of European avocados and mangoes, while helping consumers better recognise their origin, seasonality, and distinctive characteristics.

As part of the campaign, an event held on 8 September at the Teatro Sofía in Madrid to launch the season for European mangoes grown in Spain. The gathering brought together industry representatives and experts in wellness, nutrition, and physical activity, transforming the stage into a multisensory experience. Through various interactive activities involving the audience, attendees experienced how sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing influence the perception of food.

Chef Jorge González Méndez rounded off the day with a live cooking demonstration and a gourmet brunch, featuring the European mango as the star ingredient in a variety of sweet and savoury dishes.
