A supermarket that puts its produce outside, to create an engaging market feel that attracts busy professionals
Independent greengrocers across the globe often place their fresh fruit and vegetables outside the front of their stores, but to see a supermarket do the same is something of a collector’s item.
Here in central Zurich, that’s exactly what the Coop City St Annahof store has done, to very good effect. The result is an inviting, bustling addition to an urban store that does a brisk trade thanks to a steady flow of busy professionals who work in the surrounding area.
There’s a lot of loose product, which adds to the feeling that this is somehow a market stall rather than a retail produce department. And as well as imported essentials like bananas, avocados, and kiwifruit, there’s a sizeable volume of locally grown items.
