Banana crops across the Canary Islands have been damaged by a wind storm, according to the Association of Banana Producers of Canarias (Asprocan).

The industry body was unable to quantify the effect of the high winds, but advised that plantations on northern Tenerife and eastern La Palma were most badly affected, while those in the north of Gran Canaria had also been hit.

Asprocan suggested that the impact of the unusual weather would be offset by this season's 10 per cent increase in production on the previous year.

Conditions were expected to return to normal within a few hours.
