Exports up in volume and value in the first half of 2025
Portuguese exports of fruits, vegetables, and flowers grew by 9.2 per cent in value to €1.288bn in the first half of 2025 compared to the year-earlier period. Industry association Portugal Fresh said the data from the National Statistics Institute also showed an 8.9 per cent increase in export volumes, which totalled more than 837,000 tonnes.
Gonçalo Santos Andrade, president of Portugal Fresh, commented: “The European Union is the main destination for fruits, vegetables, and flowers produced in Portugal. We offer differentiated, food-safe, and high-quality products”.
Imports also increased in the first half of the year, climbing by 9.5 per cent in value to €1.486bn and 11.2 per cent in volume to 1.24mn tonnes.
“We need ambition and a solid commitment to unlock the enormous potential of the agricultural sector and reduce the burden of imports,” said Andrade. He highlighted cooperation between farmers and the concentration of supply as necessary strategies, alongside investments in irrigation infrastructure and efficient water management.
