Machine combines Spectrim with LUCAi, allowing precise dehydration detection, consistent sizing results, and optimised throughput
Tomra Food will showcase its innovative optical blueberry sorter, the Tomra 5S Blueberry, at next week’s Fruit Attraction.
According to the company, the 5S Blueberry – featuring Spectrim with LUCAi – has been designed to maximise the value of every blueberry. Every transfer point and mechanical contact has been optimised to reduce impact, pressure, and drop heights, helping to preserve the fruit’s natural bloom, enhance its visual appearance, and protect its overall integrity. By combining Spectrim with LUCAi, growers and packers achieve precise dehydration detection, consistent sizing results, and optimised throughput.
“The new Tomra 5S Blueberry represents a major breakthrough for the blueberry industry,” said senior product manager Troy Cleaver, noting that the solution was developed with a clear focus on the factors that truly matter to the market: product quality, sorting precision, and operational control.
Visitors will also be able to see live demonstrations of LUCAi deep learning technology, offering a real-world look at how operators of apple, blueberry, cherry, citrus, kiwifruit and stonefruit packing facilities can benefit from deep learning in their daily operations.
LUCAi deep learning technology has been trained using thousands of real images of fruit defects, collected across multiple seasons, regions, and product varieties. This enables the detection of subtle defects that are traditionally difficult to identify, ensuring stable and consistent sorting performance even in the most demanding environments.
According to Tomra, Spectrim with LUCAi detects subtle defects in apples, blueberries, citrus, kiwifruit, and stonefruit, helping to reduce labour requirements, strengthen quality control, decrease waste, and increase the percentage of premium-grade product.
The company claims its InVision2 with LUCAi sets new standards for cherry grading and quality consistency, boosting profitability and providing operational stability.
“LUCAi offers clear defect classification, confidence levels, and severity scoring, enabling operators to extract maximum value from every piece of fruit,” it said.
In addition, visitors can explore other Tomra Food solutions for growers, packhouses, and processors – designed to reduce reliance on manual grading, improve quality control, minimise losses, and increase the proportion of premium products.
