Blue Forest blueberries Uruguay

Uruguayan fruit producers say the adverse weather than struck the departments of Salto and Paysandú earlier this month has caused significant damage to local blueberry production.

Together, the two areas account for 60 per cent of the country’s blueberry exports according to producer and exporter association Upefruy.

They estimate that the torrential rains, localised hail and winds of more than 100km per hour that struck the region on 18 October resulted in loss or around 1,500 tonnes of berries out of a total crop of 2,400 tonnes.

Uruguay has exported around 650 tonnes of blueberries so far this season.
