Group rolls out option in parts of London, marking significant expansion of grocery service following closure of physical stores

Amazon is to add fresh fruit and vegetables to its same-day delivery service in parts of the UK.
In a statement, the group said customers in parts of London can now order fresh, perishable groceries with their Same-Day Delivery orders, alongside other items already available – from tea and coffee to household essentials, electronics, fashion, and beauty items.
The move marks a significant expansion for Amazon’s grocery service in the UK, which recently took a step back from bricks-and-mortar retail when it closed all 19 of its Amazon Fresh stores – with five of those to be converted into Whole Foods outlets.
As well as fresh fruit and vegetables, online shoppers in activated areas will now be able to have meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, bread, eggs and frozen foods delivered to them on the day of ordering.
The service will initially be available in parts of central and east London, but the group said it would expand it to additional postcodes and more areas across the country in the coming months.
“We’re focused on making grocery shopping easier and faster for customers, with low prices on millions of items,” said John Boumphrey, Amazon’s UK country manager.
Temperature-sensitive items will be delivered in insulated, recyclable packaging that has been designed to maintain freshness, the company added.
