Tomato supplier is collecting emergency donations following earthquake estimated to have affected 300,000 people

Major Moroccan tomato supplier Delassus has launched an appeal to help rebuild houses and schools following the devastating earthquake that struck the country earlier this month.

On 8 September a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, 70 kilometres from Marrakesh, and according to the British Red Cross, humanitarian needs are growing.

The death toll now stands at nearly 3,000 people and injuries total more than 5,600, according to official figures.

The United Nations reported that around 300,000 people are likely to have been affected by the earthquake, and UNICEF said this number probably included 100,000 children.

Deputy managing director of the Delassus Group, Fatiha Charrat, is driving the initiative to raise funds for the affected villages.

She said: “A week ago, Morocco experienced an earthquake that caused thousands of villages in the high Atlas Mountains to collapse. In addition to the 3,000 lost lives, tens of thousands of individuals were left with absolutely nothing. They are scattered across the mountains with difficult access.

“Since then, all the country, government, hundreds of associations, and thousands of people have rushed to help the villagers by buying and distributing food, water and basic necessities.

“Tents and mattresses were quick to follow, although most people are still sleeping without protection over their heads.

“Reconstruction of homes for the victims is now necessary and urgent with a cold winter looming. Significant resources are being sought. The funds raised will serve reconstruction of one village or more depending on the money raised.”

Through its charitable Sanady Foundation, Delassus Group has created a special bank account called ‘Sanady Fonds Seisme’ to collect funds for rebuilding houses and schools in affected villages.
