Potato supplier aims to cut scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90 per cent by 2045
Greenvale has secured validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its 2045 net-zero targets.
The SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It independently assesses corporate climate targets against the latest science to ensure businesses align with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
Greenvale said achieving SBTi approval marks a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability and climate action.
The major potato supplier’s near- and long-term targets have been approved, requiring the company to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 58.8 per cent by 2034.
Additionally, scope 3 emissions—covering purchased goods and services, transportation, employee commuting and more—must be reduced by 63.8 per cent from its 2023 baseline. By 2045, the company is committed to cutting scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90 per cent and significantly reducing scope 3 emissions per tonne of potatoes sold.
Joann Reid, head of technical at Greenvale, said: “We’re in constant pursuit of ways to address environmental and climate-related challenges in the potato growing and packing sector. We are proud to join over 4,000 businesses with approved targets, ready to make a difference.
“Having our ambitious climate and sustainability targets approved shows our customers, stakeholders and teams that we are taking our environmental impact incredibly seriously, and we are doing so utilising a science-based approach to ensure we can maximise these efforts and leave both the industry and planet better for it by 2045.”
