A Guernsey herb production company is applying for permission to build an acre of modern glass - something unheard of for many years on the island.

Fresh Guernsey Herbs has been re-placing old glass with modern structures, and the new glass would be erected on adjacent land next to an existing unit.

Simon Falla, a director of the firm, said that the business has changed, moving away from the traditional herbs to more towards salad herbs.

If planning permission is granted, it is the intention to design the new structure to permit the introduction of increased mechanisation.

One source said: “Although this cannot be hailed as a true revival of the once bouyant Guernsey horticultural industry, it is a welcome indication of the sustaining of a niche industry which has replaced the heavy exporting of tomatoes and flowers to the UK.”
