Jharkhand in eastern India has become the latest state in the country to export fresh mangoes to the UK.

According to export development agency Apeda, the first commercial consignment from the state departed Kolkata on 4 June bound for London, exported by Agrofresh.

Local reports said it consisted of 1.5 tonnes of fresh Amrapali mangoes, sourced from an all-women company called Beura Farmer Producer Company.

Apeda said it continued to focus efforts on the development of export ties for producers across India, helping them to meet stricter export requirements and quality standards in order to connect with international markets.

The news coincides with a reported global shortage of premium mango varieties, in particular India’s prized Alphonso variety, which has led to significantly higher prices for the fruit on the international market.

The lack of volume is blamed on unusual, adverse weather conditions in major production areas, as well as increased costs and disruption in shipping and airfreight.
