Chillies

Asian wholesale company TRS is recalling packs of its extra hot whole chillies after the product was found to contain excessive levels of a toxin linked to cancer.

The Food Standards Agency reported that 50g packs of ‘TRS Whole Chillies Extra Hot’, with a best before date of 28 February 2019, were being removed from cash-and-carry shelves because the product “is not in compliance with the maximum level for aflatoxins”.

The toxins, which are found naturally in some foods, are thought to cause cancer if eaten at high levels. They are produced by certain fungi found on agricultural crops, including chillies, maize, peanuts, cottonseed, and tree nuts.

As well as recalling the chillies, TRS Wholesale, which is based in Southall, west London, is displaying point of sale notices at cash-and-carry stores selling the product. These advise customers not to eat the product and instead return packs to the store where they bought them for a full refund.

No other TRS Wholesale products are known to be affected.
