Mushrooms can be enriched with Vitamin D

Evesham-based Walsh Mushrooms is launching Vitamin D-enriched mushrooms into Aldi following a £250,000 investment and two-year development project.

The company gained novel food status for the mushrooms from the European Commission (EC) in August of this year along with permission to market them across Europe.

It follows a similar product from fellow mushroom supplier Monaghan Mushrooms, which launched Vitamin D-enriched mushrooms into Tesco last year.

Walsh Mushrooms managing director, Padraic O’Leary, said: “It is important to continue to develop and add to the health benefits of mushrooms which, in turn, will help bring in new customers into the category.

“With northern Europe not having adequate levels of sun light to produce Vitamin D during the winter months this is an inexpensive and natural way to improve your intake.”

Public Health England (PHE) recommends children from the age of one year and adults need 10g of Vitamin D a day, which could be provided by three to four mushrooms.

Vitamin D mushrooms from Walsh Mushrooms will be available in selected Aldi stores in the Midlands from early October.
