Tropical storm Isaac hit the Dominican Republic at the weekend, causing a reported five fatalities and provoking floods and landslides, damaging homes, power lines and crops, and interrupting road connections.

According to Church World Service, the southwestern region has been affected the most, with strong winds downing many trees and devastating agricultural areas, including banana plantations.

In neighbouring Haiti, the situation has been even worse, with Fox News reporting a death toll of 24.

A bulletin from Church World Service stated that agricultural areas had been hit hard, with banana, coconut and avocado plantations affected by flooding, and orange and bean crops also facing damages.
