More than 1,500 people attended the third edition of Territorio Aguacate, Latin America’s leading Hass avocado-themed conference and trade show, which took place in Medellín last week.

The event covered key industry themes including sustainability, productivity, marketing and market trends.

“This time we highlighted the work of rural farmers, as well as exporters, who strive daily to promote the development of our country, demonstrating that in Colombia the investment and export capacity is maintained and is increasing,” said Jorge Enrique Restrepo, director of Corpohass.

“We want the Hass avocado to continue to be the protagonist, with more sustainable diplomacy and to continue increasing its production.”

Praising Corpohass for staging the vent, Jorge Enrique Bedoya, president of the Farmers' Society, said much had been learned about new technologies, processes, and the relationship between suppliers and exporters of the fruit.

“Without a doubt it was a strategic meeting for this sector, which every day acquires greater importance within the balance of agricultural exports of our country and increasingly consolidates new accesses to international markets that may be of great relevance in the future,” he noted.

Among the standout sessions of the conference were a talk entitled ‘Strategy and impacts, bees in avocado pollination’ and another called ‘Forest, Biodiversity and Water’.

In the first, experienced zoologist Boris Velásquez highlighted the importance of cross-pollination through bees, exposing the experiences that have been collected in the field with the execution of this project.

In the second, the manager of the Andes Amazonía Programme, Javier Ortiz, outlined some of the sustainable production alternatives promoting native agrobiodiversity, as well as the harvesting systems around Hass Avocado.

The event also awarded the Sustainable Hass quality seal to a number of companies for the positive environmental impact they have generated in each of the stages of the value chain. These were Fruty Green, Reforesta, Grupo Persea, Agricons, Agrícola El Rubí, Agropecuaria Las Acacias, Procolhass, Aguacates Gourmet, Frutales Las Lajas, Cartama, Jardín Exotics, Westfalia Fruit Colombia, Green West and Montana Fruits.
