Banana producers in Guadeloupe and Martinique, together with those in the Windward Islands, have launched a new project for regional cooperation called Banane Durable Caraïbes (Sustainable Caribbean Bananas).

This project, which is in line with the programme for regional cooperation, INTERREG Caraïbes, aims to fight against disease, to limit the environmental impact of production and to improve social conditions.

Financing of the project is guaranteed by producers in the actual countries, as well as the European Union and the regional councils of Guadeloupe and Martinique.

Eric de Lucy, president of UGPBAN, said that the project would help to “establish for the first time an ambitious collaboration between players in the Windward Islands and those in the French West Indies” before describing the banana sector as essential and irreplaceable for the region.
