The price of fruit and vegetables in France has increased rapidly since June 2007, according to the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), by 17.9 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.

The main reason for such a rise, according to the INSEE, has been the damage caused by unfavourable weather conditions, which has led to a decrease in supply.

“The damage caused by the frost and the rain, as well as the reduction in the number of peach orchards, goes to explain both the drop in supply of peaches and apricots and the increase in prices,” a press release from the INSEE said.

Prices of peaches and apricots have risen by 23.8 per cent and 53.6 per cent respectively, according to the INSEE.
