Sales of Spain's fresh fruit and vegetables to Canada have enjoyed a considerable upturn in the opening five months of 2018, driven by the Global Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the US which came into force provisionally in September last year.

Fresh produce exports climbed 87 per cent in volume to 34,992 tonnes and 81 per cent in value to €39.3m for the January-May period, aided by the elimination, through the agreement, of duties that applied to 98 per cent of the products the EU exchanges with Canada.

According to Fepex, the leading fresh produce exports to Canada included citrus, cabbage, garlic, onions and peppers.

'For Fepex, the tariff disarmament applied to the EU's exports of fruit and vegetables creates new opportunities for SPanish producers,' the organisation stated.
