German supermarkets need to change their procurement policies to avoid sourcing bananas and pineapples from farms that deny worker rights, according to a new report by Oxfam Germany.
The report claims that price pressure exerted by Germany’s five leading food retail chains is leading to abuses in Costa Rica and Ecuador.
“The price war means suppliers are ignoring the rights of workers on plantations,” said Oxfam Germany trade expert Marita Wiggerthale.
Oxfam claims workers are underpaid, denied trade union rights and forced to use banned pesticides.
