A sudden hailstorm late in the afternoon of June 4 has damaged apple, pear and peach crops in Lerida. Some growers have seen their entire crops wiped out, according to local union officials but the agriculture department of the regional executive calculates that some 315ha of peaches, 147ha of nectarines, 90ha of pears and 58ha of apples have been damaged. Much of the stone fruit was just about to be harvested and seasonal workers already taken on for the harvest are being redirected elsewhere. Some 30ha of onion production has also been lost.
