Clement Bros begin asparagus commercial cuts

The Clement Brothers' asparagus business, based at Tuddenham, near Ipswich, started full commercial cuts of asparagus on April 15. The first variety being harvested is Jersey Giant. Partner John Clement said: "The quality is superb with very high percentages of class one."

Peter Knight, general manager of Asparagus International, added: "This variety is capable of breaking dormancy at lower soil temperatures than the other commercial varieties used in the UK. At Tuddenham Hall this will give approximately a seven day advantage over Gijnlim, the industry standard." This pattern is mirrored at a commercial asparagus growers site in the West Midlands.

Cool winds from the north east has seen this year’s first full cut come to the knife several days earlier than they have previously harvested on the Suffolk coast.
