The government has set out fresh proposals to protect agency workers from exploitation at the hands of cynical employers.

The Success At Work strategy paper proposes a raft of new measures, including:

Giving workers the right to withdraw from accommodation, transport, or other services provided by an agency without suffering penalties.

Alerting migrant workers to their rights and flagging common scams.

Defining in law what can be included as a reasonable cost when an agency seeks a fee for including a jobseeker’s details in a publication.

Making clear in guidance that driving agencies who flout the law by allowing drivers to work beyond their hours can face criminal prosecution.

Employment relations minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: “Agency workers are likely to be the largest single group to benefit from our planned increase in statuory entitlement to paid annual leave.”

It is estimated there are some 600,000 agency workers across the UK.
