Well Pict County Local (WPCL) has acquired Ivy House Farm at Graftygreen, Kent, to ensure supplies of local apples to Asda stores in the county.

The future of the farm could have been in doubt with its owner considering retirement, but WPCL - the local sourcing arm of the Well Pict European group - stepped in to ensure the future of the orchards.

“We have acquired a highly successful farm that grows Bramley, Braeburn, Cox, Worcester and Conference apples and pears,” said Josh Kann, WPCL’s general manager. “Our acquisition consolidates our position in the apple- and pear-growing industry and shows our long-term obligation and commitment as growers, packers and marketers enabling us to continue to contribute, sustain and support the apple and pear industry in Kent. We will be able to increase our sales of local apples and pears to Asda IP, who are great supporters of local produce.”

WPCL has appointed Chris Kember to manage the farm, which has been taken over from Mike Davidson who has grown fruit at the site since 1963 when the 65 acres were divided between soft- and top-fruit production. “I know that this acquisition is important for future generations as I have seen many farms in various industries decline in the past in Kent. The acquisition clearly indicates the importance of rural survival for future generations and consumers,” said Davidson.
