Jubilee win for Waitrose

Waitrose saw a record week of trading in the run-up to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The chain's turnover peaked at £123 million as sales rose by 20 per cent in the week leading up to 2 June.

Cider and British ales were the most popular beverages for the Jubilee, experiencing a sales increase of 70 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. English wine also had its most successful week on record, with a sales increase of 96 per cent.

Shoppers also helped sales of red, white and blue icing rise by 637 per cent, as many turned to home baking to celebrate the Jubilee.

Managing director Mark Price, said: “The prospect of a long weekend and a wonderful focus for celebration spurred shoppers into action with fresh produce sales also soaring.”
