Former London mayor and leading Brexit campaigner Boris Johnson has brought asparagus into an argument on why the UK should leave the EU.

Johnson, visiting a food market in Cornwall on the campaign trail, was filmed by the Press Association making his case for why a Brexit would benefit British agriculture.

Speaking with a bunch of aspargus spears in his hand, Johnson said: '[Farmers] understand that if we come out (of the EU), then we can lift so much of the bureaucracy and regulation of farmers not just in Cornwall but around the country, and continue to support UK agriculture.

'The UK asparagus will be just as sprouting, just as delicious: in fact, even better! And that is the point we are trying to make.'
