Kerry McCarthy MP

Kerry McCarthy has resigned

Shadow Defra minister Kerry McCarthy has resigned from the post and has been replaced by Rachael Maskell MP for York Central.

In her letter of resignation, McCarthy said that in light of last week’s vote to leave the EU Labour needs a new leader and an alternative vision for the country.

She wrote: “Many of the critical issues handled by the Department are intrinsically linked with our membership of the European Union. The referendum result was a huge disappointment, and we now face the challenge of negotiating our future relationship with the rest of Europe.”

She tweeted that she will continue to stand up for the environment from Labour’s backbenches.

Former shadow defence minister Maskell has campaigned for the Living Wage in her constituency of York Central, and has been at the forefront of the campaign to the save the NHS.
