Zespri season makes early start

The New Zealand kiwifruit season started this week with early sendings of Zespri Gold fruit to Japan.

Marketing company Zespri said the harvest had started ahead of schedule. Growers of green variety Hayward have just started picking. Zespri ceo Lain Jager said: “We are delighted with the quality of this early season harvest - the crop is clean, with good-sized fruit and excellent taste.

“Our marketing teams in Asia and Europe plan to capitalise on the early start to the season with aggressive marketing campaigns, and our customers and consumers are eagerly anticipating the arrival of great tasting, high-quality, healthy New Zealand kiwifruit.”

Meanwhile, the first arrivals in Europe are expected to ship over the next two weeks for arrival by the end of April, to capitalise on the early season.
