Agrexco apricots 2011

Agrexco has started the second phase of its stonefruit export campaign with the season's first offering of premium Carmel-branded apricots.

Carmel apricots are a unique variety, according to Agrexco, bearing the highly respected Ben-Dor brand, a grower famous for outstanding quality of new varieties.

The season for apricots, which are cultivated from Ashkelon in the south of Israel to Metual in the north, runs from mid-may through until the end of June, in a wide assortment of varieties, colours and tastes.

'This year's apricots are exceptionally aromatic and tasty with high sugar levels,' said product manager Davidi Hayman. 'Cooperation between Carmel and Ben-Dor promises the customer premium stonefruit, while Agrexco's meticulous shipment procedures safeguard their quality.'

Delivery of the fruit comes two weeks after Agrexco kicked off the stonefruit season with shipments of peaches and nectarines.

Meanwhile, Agrexco's UK arm has revealed that the new season's fig crop is due to arrive in the country in early June.

'This year is looking good, with slightly above-average yields, better than last year when late frosts affected the crop,' noted Ian Crispin, sales manager for Agrexco UK. 'We are starting slightly later, but the good weather has allowed for excellent eating quality.

'The first variety will be Brown Turkey, closely followed by Bursa, the premium variety produced by one grower exclusively for Agrexco,' he added.

Mr Crispin said that the group was seeing a gradual increase in demand from UK customers, both from multiples and wholesalers, while also increasing grower share in Israel.
