Damien Kozlowski of Agro Alians

Agro Alians, a major supplier of fruit and vegetables from Poland, has been declared bankrupt, Eurofruit has learned, with the inability of eastern European customers in particular to settle their debts with the group reported to be the main reason for its failure.

In a statement, the company said they had been forced to take the action due to a loss of income that it was owed for fresh produce it had supplied.

The company has been selling Polish produce to customers in 25 countries across the European Union since 2005, with what was regarded as a strong sales presence in both western and eastern European countries.

According to the company's chairman Damian Kozlowski, the majority of unpaid invoices were in eastern Europe, and the majority of those in Russia.

'Sale with terms of payment in Russia, especially for Azerbaijani traders in Russia, is extremely dangerous,' Kozlowski told Eurofruit.

Citing two Moscow-based companies by name, as well as another foreign-owned importer based in Hungary, Kozlowski said the failure of those and other importers to pay their bills had caused 'big financial problems' in many companies in the Polish fresh produce trade.

'Examples of dishonest companies exist all over the world, including Poland,' he said. 'However, giving testimony may protect others.'

He added: 'The management board of Agro Alians would like to officially apologise to its business partners, especially its suppliers, for problems and financial losses caused by the company's bankruptcy.'
