At a press lunch last week, organic fair BioFach unveiled plans for next February’s event in Nuremberg, Germany, which will mark BioFach’s 20th birthday.

Barbara Böck of event organisers NürnbergMesse said that BioFach was attracting increasing numbers of visitors from conventional retail chains, a sign of the organic sector’s broadening appeal.

Organic market consultant Kai Kreuzer said that in 2007, conventional retailers in Germany saw an increase in organic food sales of 42 per cent, with retailers and even discounters significantly enlarging their product range.

Although Germany is the biggest organic food market in the EU, Denmark, BioFach’s “country of the year” for 2009, wins on a per capita basis. “In Denmark, sales of organic food per capita are the highest in the EU,” Ms Böck said. “Denmark will add some Scandinavian flair to the event.”

In the run-up to BioFach 2009, a two-day conference will also be held, focusing on the issue of sustainability.
