Following a comprehensive analysis of economic and social indicators, Turkey has been approved as a Fairtrade producer country, with the Network of Asia and Pacific Producers providing support to future certified producers
Fairtrade International has announced that Turkey is now a Fairtrade producer country.
This means it has been added to the list of countries where raw materials for certified products can be sourced in Western Asia.
In March 2025, the Fairtrade International Board of Directors approved the expansion of the Fairtrade Geographical Scope Policy of Producer Certification to include Turkey following numerous requests from member organisations to source hazelnuts.
To begin the process, Fairtrade Germany conducted a thorough analysis, in which it evaluated Turkey’s income per capita using data from OECD-DAC (Development Assistance Committee), its wealth disparity based on the World Bank Group’s Gini index, as well as other economic and social indicators, according to the Human Development Index.
The analysis was carried out based on the procedure outlined in Fairtrade’s Geographical Scope Policy of Producer Certification, Fairtrade International explained.
In addition, long-term impact for producers in Turkey and Fairtrade’s ability to support was also considered.
The Fairtrade Network of Asia and Pacific Producers (Fairtrade NAPP) has agreed to serve as the supporting producer network.
All future certified producers from Turkey will follow Fairtrade’s certification process that begins with contacting its independent certifier Flocert.
They will have to adhere to Fairtrade Standards, which include social, economic, and environmental requirements.
