Reports from Israel have revealed that a forest fire which devastated 50km2 in the Mount Carmel region of northern Israel last week has caused 'extensive damage' to some of the country's largest banana plantations.

The plantations affected, which are said to be among the largest in Israel, are owned by Kibbutz Beit Oren, Kibbutz Hahotarim and Kibbutz Ein Hacarmel, which together manage Coastal Bananas Ltd.

Business newspaper Globes reported an executive from Beit Oren as saying that the full extent of the damage was yet to be ascertained.

'The last time I went there, I saw extensive damage. Part of the plantation was on fire, and it does not look good. However, it's better to wait for the assessments by Ministry of Agriculture assessors,' the executive said.

Government officials are also understood to be assessing damage done by the fire to field and other crops.
