Morelos government seeking to raise standards to meet requirements of the international market

Morelos could become the third Mexican state to enter the lucrative export market for avocados. The state’s government is advancing its strategy to position Morelos avocados in international markets, including the US, with the goal of diversifying the state’s exportable supply and generating added value for local agriculture.

The main Mexican states that export avocados are Michoacán, Jalisco, Mexico City, Nayarit, and the State of Mexico. At present, just Michoacán and Jalisco are authorised to supply the US market.

The government of Morelos recently took part in the Eighth Agricultural Mobilisation Meeting for Mexico’s Central Region, organised by the Association of Avocado Producers, Packers, and Exporters of Mexico (Apeam) in Uruapan, Michoacán.

During the meeting, the state’s authorities reaffirmed their commitment to meeting the health and safety standards required by international markets. Together with the Plant Health Committee of the State of Morelos and federal authorities, they are working on implementing processes to guarantee the quality of the product for its entry into the US market.

José Víctor Sánchez Trujillo, head of Morelos’ Secretariat of Economic Development and Labour, said the push is part of a broader policy to promote exports of agricultural products from the state that has already yielded results, such as the recent shipment of packaged honey to the Netherlands.
