Lemon production in the Valencian Community is set to grow by 9.4 per cent in 2026/27. The figures were announced this week by Miguel Barrachina, the regional minister for agriculture, water, livestock, and fisheries, during the inaugural ‘Lemon Harvest’ event in Orihuela, Alicante to mark the start of the new season.

Forecasts indicate that production this year could reach 235,161 tonnes, comprising both the Fino and Verna varieties. The province of Alicante accounts for 98.5 per cent of the region’s total lemon output.

Lemon exports from the Valencian Community have also shown an upward trend. Between September 2025 and June 2026, shipments reached €397mn – an increase of 21.4 per cent on the year-earlier period.

Despite the optimism surrounding the upcoming season, Barrachina stressed the importance of having sufficient water resources throughout the campaign. The mayor of Orihuela highlighted other challenges facing producers, such as soaring production costs and challenging market conditions.

“It is of little use to have an exceptional lemon – one sold throughout Europe and recognised for its quality – if the farmer who produces it does not earn a fair return,” he said.
