McDonald’s Italy has named a South Tyrolean orchardist, two Sicilian citrus growers and a salad producer in Lombardy among 20 young farmers it will support and source from over the coming three years.
The farmers will be closely involved with supplying the US chain’s more than 500 restaurants across the whole of Italy as part of its Fattore Futuro 2015 initiative, which is designed to encourage young Italians working in agriculture and offer assistance in terms of fostering innovation and sustainability at their companies.
Italian supplier Vog Products already supplies McDonald’s Italy with bagged, fresh-cut apples and one of its member growers, Thomas Sparer of Bolzano-based Obsthof Sirmian, has been named among the scheme’s beneficiaries.
So too have entrepreneurs Giosuè Arcadia and Francesco Randazzo, who produce oranges for McDonald’s juices near Catania in Sicily; Roberto Favazza and Claudio Scipioni, potato suppliers based in Padua and L’Aquila respectively; and Nicola Forini, who last year established an organic lamb’s lettuce producer called La Novella Bio in the area between Bergamo and Brescia.
The winners were chosen from a total of 130 candidates that entered Fattore Futuro.
