North African country overtook Kenya to become Africa’s leading supplier of Hass avocados to Europe

Morocco exported around 140,000 tonnes of Hass avocados in 2025, almost double the volume shipped in 2024. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forestry shows a 40 per cent expansion in harvested area between 2022 and 2024, accompanied by a 17 per cent increase in production and a 34 per cent increase in exports.
The information suggests that production growth will continue in the coming years as more modern orchards come into production. In fact, Morocco has overtaken Kenya to become Africa’s biggest supplier of Hass avocados to the European Union. Around 90 per cent of Moroccan exports – 141,046 tonnes – were shipped to the EU last year.
Shipments of Kenyan avocados to Europe were hampered by logistical challenges in the Red Sea last year, causing exports to fall 19 per cent to 105,000 tonnes.
Morocco’s lower labour costs, less stringent legislation and more abundant water resources have increasingly competitive challenger to Spain, which accounts for more than three-quarters of avocados grown in Europe.
Avocado exports from Kenya, a major rival on the African continent, reached European soil at an average price of €1.09 per kilo, well above Morocco’s €0.63 per kilo, although still 50 per cent below the average unit price of shipments from Peru to the EU.
