Exports for first half of 2025 show big jump in value and volume

Peru exported 380,000 tonnes of fresh avocados worth US$731mn in the first 23 weeks of 2025. The figures, presented by Fluctuante, represent a 36 per cent increase in volume and 25 per cent increase in value compared to the year-earlier period.

“This performance is largely explained by the favourable weather conditions in the country’s main producing areas, as well as the sector’s commitment to perfecting its agricultural, harvesting, and post-harvest practices,” Fluctuante said.

“As a result, Peruvian avocados have distinguished themselves through their firmness, adequate dry matter content, and attractive appearance – qualities highly appreciated in demanding destinations such as Europe, the US, and Asia, where they have consolidated their presence thanks to their sustained quality and reliable supply.”

The average price of Peruvian avocados fell 8 per cent to US$1.92 per kilo in the first six months of this year. This was due to a significant increase in supply, which led to prices trading below US$2 per kilo. This trend is expected to continue in the coming months, coinciding with the peak production period.

“However, there is a possibility of a price recovery towards the last quarter of the year, when Mexican supply decreases and Peru gains prominence in key markets. This pressure on prices has led Peruvian companies to strengthen their logistics, especially in the face of the 12 per cent increase in freight costs to Asia during the last half of the year, reflecting the intense competition for access to these destinations,” Fluctuante said.

Lima, Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Ica account for 90 per cent of Peru’s exported volume of fresh avocados, thanks to their location on the Peruvian coast, where climatic conditions favour production of high-quality fruit. Furthermore, their proximity to ports and the presence of agro-industrial operators with export experience strengthen the competitiveness of Peruvian avocados in international markets.

In the first six months of the year, Peruvian fresh avocado exports reached 37 international markets. The Netherlands was the main destination, accounting for 35 per cent of the total exported volume, an increase of 40 per cent on the same period last year.

Spain took 18 per cent of the total (68,000 tonnes), registering growth of 18 per cent on the year-earlier period. The US was third with a share of 13 per cent share (43,000 tonnes), an increase of 113 per cent on the first half of 2024.

Despite the challenges facing the sector, such as the imposition of tariffs, rising logistics costs, and the downward revision of initial production projections, Fluctuante said the outlook for the 2025 campaign remains positive. “This performance is sustained thanks to efficient operational management, the diversification of destination markets, and rigorous compliance with international quality standards. With a consistent supply, high-quality fruit, and a well-articulated monitoring system, the campaign is expected to close with favourable results,” it said.
