Saina has played an important role in the Australian horticulture trade landscape for more than two decades, contributing enduring leadership, technical expertise and national representation across the A$17bn industry. This includes eight years as chair of Australian Horticulture Trade (AHT) – the peak industry body for Australian horticultural exporters and importers of fresh produce – and chair of the Fresh and Secure Trade Alliance (FASTA) Governance Committee.

The AHT board shared its congratulations for Saina and noted his contributions to Australia’s horticulture industry.

”As a former AHT chair, Joe led key initiatives and fostered collaboration and growth within our organisation and industry,” the board said.

“This honour is a testament to Joe’s unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions to the fresh produce sector and the export and import horticultural trade. Through his commitment, Joe has played a significant role in advancing the industry and fostering progress across the sector.

“Joe’s impressive career in horticulture is marked by his tireless advocacy for innovation, sustainability, and best practice within the sector. His efforts have helped shape the future of fresh produce in Australia, ensuring that growers, exporters, importers, and consumers all benefit from improved standards and increased opportunities. The Medal of the Order of Australia acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service, and Joe’s achievements embody the spirit of this award.”

Hort Innovation chair Julie Bird said Saina’s recognition acknowledged his commitment to strengthening Australia’s position in global horticulture markets for the benefit of Australian growers.

“His leadership and dedication have played a critical role in building trusted export pathways and supporting the long‑term success of Australia’s fresh produce sector, especially in export,” she said.

“Joe’s contribution spans governance at chair of the Fresh and Secure Trade Alliance (FASTA) Governance Committee, trade advocacy through Australian Horticultural Trade, market development and export of Australia produce to consumers around the world through his company AS Barr based in Brisbane.”
