The global banana industry is looking forward to the 2009 edition of the International Banana & Fresh Fruit Forum, which takes place on 20-22 April at the Hotel Hilton Colón in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Organised by AEBE (the Ecuadorean banana exporters’ association), the three-day event kicks off on Monday 20 April with an opening ceremony and a keynote presentation on the status of the banana disease black sigatoka, followed by the event’s welcome reception.

The conference programme starts proper on Day Two and Three with two full days of presentations, discussions and seminars focusing on a range of themes and trends affecting the international banana trade.

Top of the agenda is the impact of the financial crisis on banana demand and consumption in the European Union. Speakers will also address the latest developments in world banana production, exports and pest controls as well as the effects of climate change.

Day Three will focus primarily on new advances in the logistics of the banana trade, particularly reefer and container transport.

Other presentations will also take a special look at the production of bananas and other fruits in Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Colombia; plus the world trade of fresh fruits such as citrus, pineapples, mangoes and papayas.
