Tesco Lotus has announced the opening of a large-scale distribution centre in northeast Thailand, according to the Bangkok Post.

The facility will process 1m cases of products a week, serving more than 300 Tesco Lotus stores across Khon Kaen province, and it has the capacity to handle up to 3m cases per week.

John Christie, chief executive of Tesco Lotus, told the Bangkok Post the new project has created almost 1,000 new jobs in the area with a focus on eco-friendly technology.

“The focus of the regional distribution centre has been to get products closer to customers, and improving availability of products on shelves,” Mr Christie told the Thai daily. “By setting it up in Khon Kaen, we have also reduced trucks travelling 400,000 kilometres every week, a major reduction in carbon emissions.”

The new distribution centre will be one of Thailand’s largest, with a service area of 52,000m2, adding to the four distribution centres in the Central Region.
