VN Vietnam fruit market stall Ben Tre Mekong Delta

Reports in Vietnam have suggested that production of fruit in the Mekong Delta including grapefruit, mangoes and Durian is being hit by severe salinisation.

Farmers in Tien Giang and Ben Tre provinces have seen salt water infiltrate rivers and ponds near production areas, Tuoi Tre news reported.

Plants with low salt tolerances have died while authorities have said that thousands of hectares of fruit have been destroyed.

There appears to be no let up on the horizon, with weather forecasters predicting no rain until June, the publication said.
