In Switzerland, retail group Migros is planning on restructuring its buying organisation as it prepares for a potential discounter price war in 2009, according to Lebensmittel Zeitung.

Following the 70 per cent purchase of Denner last year, the group is planning on installing a strategic buying department in anticipation of the entry of Lidl in 2009 - an entry which could trigger a new price war with fellow German discounter Aldi.

According to reports, Migros is looking to restructure based on the fact that Denner often receives stronger buying conditions than Migros in the country.

The new strategic buying department is expected to give a clearer overview of conditions and negotiate listings, although the separate banner will continue to make independent decisions regarding their range of products.
