Ava-Asaja, which represents producers in Valencia, is asking the general public in the region of eastern Spain to boycott products and establishments which are 'typically American.' Among items on their hit list are hamburgers, tobacco products and clothes.

The organisation is also considering asking EU authorities to impose strict plant health inspection controls on US imports such as pine and almonds as a preventative measure against potential disease problems.

The action has come about following a ban on Spanish clems imposed by the US because of suspected plant health problems with consignments of the fruit in December last year.

Growers have become increasingly frustrated by the stance of their national government in negotiations with US authorities which they describe as 'betrayal'. Ava-Asaja and other groups want a formal dispute lodged with the World Trade Organisation about the matter.
