Flandria asparagus production area increases

According to preliminary estimates, the total area planted with Flandria asparagus in 2004 has risen to 160ha, representing 9.4 per cent growth compared with 2003.

This increase is mainly due to expansion in the production area in the northern part of the Belgian Limburg province. In addition, there has been evidence of more professional cultivation practices in all production areas for the past few years.

The larger total crop area will not necessarily increase the supply of Flandria asparagus in 2004. This is because there was an exceptional 15.2 per cent upturn in supply last year due to the unusual weather. The increase in the total area planted with asparagus does, however, guarantee growth in supply in the longer term.
