A Swindon schoolgirl has won Le Crunch Apples competition to design an apple character. The competition, run by Sopexa aimed to demonstrate that fruit can be fun.

Eight-year-old Charlotte Townsend created her apple character in the likeness of a pilot, winning her family a holiday to Disneyland Paris and her school, Lainesmead Primary School in Swindon, £1,000 worth of school equipment. Inspired by Charlotte’s win, head teacher, Jeanette Turner organised a healthy eating show for pupils on April 18 with the help of Le Crunch Apples. The school is no newcomer to awards. Last year, it won the Health Promoting Schools Award for its tuck shop, brain gym and walk-to-school campaign.

Charlotte recreated her Captain Crunch pilot model for the school show to which Carine Houques, who oversees Le Crunch educational activities, was invited from Paris. Carine presented Charlotte with her holiday prize and a cheque for the school for £1,000.

The winning apple character uses two Le Crunch Granny Smith apples for the body and head decorated with radishes, raisins liquorice laces, strawberries and cheese slices flying an all-bread aircraft. “Charlotte’s Captain Crunch Pilot is a stunning example of how apples can be used imaginatively, proving that fruit can be more fun than junk food,” said Jacques Vanoye, president of the French Apples Marketing Commission.
